Hello all! I have almost finished my illustrated interpretation of Edgar Allan Poe's "William Wilson". I am really happy with how this one turned out. It is probably one of the best ink work pieces I have done. I am really looking forward to seeing all four of my Edgar Allan Poe pieces hanging in the Senior Show & Celebration at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design on May 3rd 2013. If you are anyway near Lancaster, PA that night you should stop by and see the show. It is looking to be a very good show. I hope you are enjoying these pieces as much as I am enjoying making them. The next one will be for Edgar Allan Poe's "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether. It will be one of my most complex pieces to date. Stay tuned to hear more about this upcoming piece.
Also stop by the Official Facebook page of Jedediah Kahl Illustration for more art and information about what is going on in my world of art. Then if you like what you see here and on the Facebook page let us know by "Like"ing the page. Well Senior Year keeps rolling and Senior Thesis keeps moving. Now I am on my third piece. This piece will be an illustration for Edgar Allan Poe's "William Wilson". Below is the value study for the piece and soon I will start working on the inking of the final piece. If you have never read "William Wilson" by Edgar Allan Poe, you can visit http://www.online-literature.com/poe/47/ to read the whole story. It is well worth taking some time to read it. Like my other pieces for Senior Thesis, "William Wilson" is 12.75in x 19.25in. I don't usually work to this scale, but am enjoying how much detail I can put into the piece simply because of how large it is. By the end of the semester I will have 5 pen and ink drawings this size. All 5 of these pieces will be shown at the Senior Show & Celebration at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design on May 3rd. Check back later this week to see the final ink drawing for "William Wilson". It should be finished by Thursday March 28th.
Hello! Well the piece is progressing. It has been a lot of work, but it has also been quite fun to work with it. I can't wait to have it finished and see how it looks because it is going to look fantastic. It is still very early in the piece. I have put in the first part of the sky (I know I will have to darken it up when I start working on the Giants), I have the ground pretty much done and I have started working with the trees and with the stones. I will be showing this piece at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design's Senior Show & Celebration the first Friday in May. This piece will be hanging in the main gallery at the college for all of the world to see! Stay tuned for more news and updates on Senior Thesis, my Mentorship and on my book "You Don't Understand"!
Hello again everyone! I have some exciting news! I am almost finished my first children's book "You Don't Understand". I am really looking forward to having it published. This book is 24 pages long with 13 illustrated pages and follows poor Billy Beaver who can't understand why no one, not even his family understands him. Will he find out why? Find out when you read "You Don't Understand". Above is a page from the book. If you like what you see, then you are going to love the rest of the book. Stay tuned to find out more about "You Don't Understand", my Senior Thesis/Senior Show & Celebration, and my mentorship with Socar Myles.

This is going to be a really terrific show, so if you are in the area you should stop by and take a look at all of the art work. I will also be selling my children's book ("You Don't Understand"), prints of my work and the pieces that are hanging in the show! This post card was designed by Lisa DeAngelo, a senior who will also be showing in the Senior Show & Celebration.
Hello everyone, I have been putting in a bit of work on my mentorship and I thought I would pass on how it is going. I currently have the piece drawn out to size on Bristol board and have created a value study to help me lay out where my darks and lights are going to be. This is just a rough value study and things are going to change a little bit in the finished piece, but I think this is coming along quite nicely.
Stay tuned for in progress shots of "The Skilled Hunter" and on my third thesis piece "William Wilson". Hello all. As promised here is an update on "The Tell-Tale Heart". It still needs some work with pushing the contrast to make different elements pop. I also have to go back in under the floor which still needs a bit of work. Don't forget to stop by the official Jedediah Kahl Illustration page on Facebook and "Like" the page!
Well, welcome back everyone! As it says above, I have finished the preliminary drawing for my mentorship with Socar Myles. I took a passage from the Grimm Brothers tale "The Skilled (Experienced) Huntsman" and am creating an illustration for it that could be used as a plate at the beginning of an anthology. Below is the text I was working with. Then he set out and found himself in a very large forest, which he could not get to the end of in one day. When evening came he seated himself in a high tree in order to escape from the wild beasts. Towards midnight, it seemed to him as if a tiny little light glimmered in the distance. Then he looked down through the branches towards it, and kept well in his mind where it was. But in the first place he took off his hat and threw it down in the direction of the light, so that he might go to the hat as a mark when he had descended. Then he got down and went to his hat, put it on again and went straight forwards. The farther he went, the larger the light grew, and when he got close to it he saw that it was an enormous fire, and that three giants were sitting by it, who had an ox on the spit, and were roasting it. Presently one of them said, "I must just taste if the meat will soon be fit to eat," and pulled a piece off, and was about to put it in his mouth when the huntsman shot it out of his hand. "Well, really," said the giant, "if the wind has not blown the bit out of my hand!" and helped himself to another. But when he was just about to bite into it, the huntsman again shot it away from him. On this the giant gave the one who was sitting next him a box on the ear, and cried angrily, Why art thou snatching my piece away from me?" "I have not snatched it away," said the other, "a sharpshooter must have shot it away from thee." The giant took another piece, but could not, however, keep it in his hand, for the huntsman shot it out. Stop back later and see the finish of my second thesis piece, "The Tell-Tale Heart" and more updates on my mentorship. Also stop by my Facebook to see more update and more art. Then if you like what you see, let me know by clicking the "Like" button.
Hey everyone! Work for "The Tell-Tale Heart" has been moving ahead quite steadily. Below is the value study for the piece. Now that I have me values laid out for the piece, it is time to start adding ink to the finished piece. Look for the finished ink work next week.
