Greetings everybody! Welcome back! I have finished my mentorship piece, "The Skilled Hunter". Since the last post I really went into the piece and pushed the contrast of the piece. The sky has become immensely darker so that the light from the fire can be seen more clearly. I also went into the shadows on the giants and made them deeper. This way they look more three dimensional and look more realistic with the light from the fire. Finally I darkened up the foreground. The shadows on the stones, the ground and the closest shrubs are now closer to realistic. I really enjoyed working on this piece and am very pleased with how it turned out. This piece will be on display at the Senior Show & Celebration at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design on May 3rd. This will also be the city of Lancaster's First Friday. If you love looking at art, this is an even that you can't miss. All of the galleries in Lancaster will be showing new shows starting that night. The Senior Show & Celebration begins at 5 o'clock. The whole college will be turned into a gallery and all of the floors will be open until 8 o'clock with the main gallery remaining open until 9 o'clock. If you are in the area be sure to stop by and say hello.

Hello again! I am almost done with my mentorship. I have everything inked, now I just need to go in and do some small tweaks and additions and then it will be done. I have to go in and define some edges while darkening up some aspects to make some things pop while others fade. I am also going to darken parts of the sky to give it a better feeling of the light from the fire and how dark the night is. Can't wait to see what it looks like when it is finished! Check back soon for the finished work and the finished and reworks for my Senior Thesis!
Hello Everyone! I continue to work on my mentorship, "The Skilled Hunter" with Socar Myles. Here is where I am right now. Since last time I have finished the background trees, the foreground rocks, added in one of the large bushes in the foreground and have finished with the fire. I also took some time to darken up the sky. It is coming along nicely, but still has a ways to go. Check back soon for more updates!
Hello! Well the piece is progressing. It has been a lot of work, but it has also been quite fun to work with it. I can't wait to have it finished and see how it looks because it is going to look fantastic. It is still very early in the piece. I have put in the first part of the sky (I know I will have to darken it up when I start working on the Giants), I have the ground pretty much done and I have started working with the trees and with the stones. I will be showing this piece at the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design's Senior Show & Celebration the first Friday in May. This piece will be hanging in the main gallery at the college for all of the world to see! Stay tuned for more news and updates on Senior Thesis, my Mentorship and on my book "You Don't Understand"!
Hello everyone, I have been putting in a bit of work on my mentorship and I thought I would pass on how it is going. I currently have the piece drawn out to size on Bristol board and have created a value study to help me lay out where my darks and lights are going to be. This is just a rough value study and things are going to change a little bit in the finished piece, but I think this is coming along quite nicely.
Stay tuned for in progress shots of "The Skilled Hunter" and on my third thesis piece "William Wilson". Well, welcome back everyone! As it says above, I have finished the preliminary drawing for my mentorship with Socar Myles. I took a passage from the Grimm Brothers tale "The Skilled (Experienced) Huntsman" and am creating an illustration for it that could be used as a plate at the beginning of an anthology. Below is the text I was working with. Then he set out and found himself in a very large forest, which he could not get to the end of in one day. When evening came he seated himself in a high tree in order to escape from the wild beasts. Towards midnight, it seemed to him as if a tiny little light glimmered in the distance. Then he looked down through the branches towards it, and kept well in his mind where it was. But in the first place he took off his hat and threw it down in the direction of the light, so that he might go to the hat as a mark when he had descended. Then he got down and went to his hat, put it on again and went straight forwards. The farther he went, the larger the light grew, and when he got close to it he saw that it was an enormous fire, and that three giants were sitting by it, who had an ox on the spit, and were roasting it. Presently one of them said, "I must just taste if the meat will soon be fit to eat," and pulled a piece off, and was about to put it in his mouth when the huntsman shot it out of his hand. "Well, really," said the giant, "if the wind has not blown the bit out of my hand!" and helped himself to another. But when he was just about to bite into it, the huntsman again shot it away from him. On this the giant gave the one who was sitting next him a box on the ear, and cried angrily, Why art thou snatching my piece away from me?" "I have not snatched it away," said the other, "a sharpshooter must have shot it away from thee." The giant took another piece, but could not, however, keep it in his hand, for the huntsman shot it out. So, it has been awhile since I updates about how the mentorship is going. The ball has now started to roll. For the mentorship I will be working with Socar Myles to create an illustration for a Grimm Fairy Tale. The tale the I picked is called "The Skilled Huntsman". Stay tuned for sketches and in progress updates. To read the entire tale feel free to visit:
http://classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/grimm/bl-grimm-huntsman.htm At my college, the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D) we have to complete a mandatory mentorship. The mentor can be any professional artist that we either work similar too or in a style or media that we are trying to work in. I am proud and honored to say that I have found my mentor.
My mentor is Socar Myles. She is a wonderful artist who uses pen and ink. Her work blows me away. Check it out at her website. Here is the address: http://www.gorblimey.com/bite_the_seagull/ I hope you enjoy her work as much as I do. Stay tuned for more news about my mentorship, my senior these and more fun exciting stuff from the world of Jedediah Kahl Illustration. |
